Throughout Europe, the Roma people, often known as “gypsies,” are treated as second-class citizens, facing prejudice, hatred, and violence.

They are forced to leave their homes, provided with poor education, and segregated from the rest of society. Roma comprise one of Europe’s largest minorities, with between 10 and 12 million people, but they are also one of the most deprived. Although European Union law forbids discrimination on the grounds of race or ethnicity, Roma face some of the worst discrimination, particularly when it comes to education and housing.
