Senkwekwe the silverback mountain gorilla was shot dead in 2007, during a violent conflict in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He weighed at least 500 pounds and it took more than a dozen men to strap his body to a makeshift stretcher and carry it away.
A photo by Brent Stirton, captures the scene in Virunga National Park, where half of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas live.
