“The beautiful photographic series that resulted, Skate Girls of Kabul, draws attention to young girls catching air or attempting a kickflip in one of the world’s most oppressed countries for women. By spreading the powerful imagery, the photographer is hoping to help create a landscape of gender equality in Afghanistan—or at least help contribute to the conversation. (In Afghanistan, it’s considered “taboo” for women to ride bicycles, but they’re allowed to skateboard—and even wear traditional dress while they shred.)”
