For the last several years, China has been named the world’s leading executioner. Owing to secrecy in that country, the exact number of executions are not available, but human rights monitors believe it to be in the thousands—more than every other country’s executions combined. Amnesty International has denounced the use of the death penalty in China and beyond, and it has called on the Chinese government to provide accurate statistics on the numbers of prisoners it has put to death.
